Useful Information
A Level Fashion and Textiles offers students an exciting opportunity to develop skills in textile processes and apply them to Fashion, Textile Art and Interior outcomes. You will gain a thorough understanding of the following techniques: drawing, mark making, machine embroidery, dyeing, screen-printing, weaving, crochet, macramé, fabric manipulation and heat-printing. Alongside these textile processes you will develop skills in constructing fashion garments.

Course Overview

In the first year students will be introduced to a range of different textile approaches; stitch, print and constructed. These techniques will be developed to produce fashion, textile Art and Interior outcomes. During the second year students will be able to focus on a specialist area such as fabric manipulation, surface design or constructed textiles for their personal investigation.

Throughout the course your fashion/textile creations will be supported by research studying the work of practitioners’ learning from their techniques and processes. The main purpose of the course is to develop your ability to appreciate the visual world and enable you to respond in a creative way through hands on making.

Students are expected to make a financial contribution towards the cost of materials of £10 at the beginning of each year.

The College runs a number of educational experiences each year to enable students to contextualise their learning. These experiences include trips to galleries, fashion shows, workshops and artist/designer studios. We also have talks in College from visiting speakers, including a variety of local designers and artists.

Entry Requirements

Students wishing to include A Levels in their programme need to have (or expect to achieve) at least five GCSE passes, with at least two at Grade 5 or above (and a satisfactory school reference) in order to be accepted on an A Level/BTEC Level 3 Programme.

Students should also meet the following minimum GCSE requirement:

  • Grade 4 in Art or relevant Design Technology GCSE and Grade 5 if taking 2 Art courses
  • Students who do not have a GCSE (or equivalent) in Art and Design or Textiles will be considered on the basis of a portfolio review.
