Useful Information

This is a practical Fine Art course giving students the opportunity to develop an appreciation of the visual world and to respond to it in a personal and creative way. Emphasis is placed on developing visual language skills through drawing, painting and printmaking and much of the work is based directly on observation. Our students have an excellent record in gaining places at Art College and university, potentially leading to a career within the creative industries. We also have many students who take the subject for their own interest as a balance to their more academic subjects.

A Level Art is an extremely rewarding course, however students should be aware that ally projects involve a high degree of independence.



Course Overview

The course covers a wide range of topics; students will learn how to:

  • Develop ideas to demonstrate analytical and critical understanding 
  • Experiment with resources, media, techniques and processes while reviewing and refining ideas 
  • Record ideas and insights and learn how to reflect on work and progress 
  • Present a personal and meaningful final piece

The College runs a number of educational experiences each year to enable students to contextualise their learning. These experiences include trips to galleries, outdoor drawing opportunities and talks by visiting speakers, including a variety of local designers and artists.

Assessment

There are a wide range of academic and vocational courses available and the art team is happy to help students choose the most appropriate programme.

The Visual Arts areas are well resourced and set up for a variety of media including print making and textiles, photography and graphic design.There are also dedicated resource areas equipped with Apple Mac Computers.



Entry Requirements

Students wishing to include A Levels in their programme need to have (or expect to achieve) at least five GCSE passes, with at least two at Grade 5 or above (and a satisfactory school reference) in order to be accepted on an A Level/BTEC Level 3 Programme.

Students should also meet the following minimum GCSE requirement:

  • Grade 4 in Art or relevant Design Technology GCSE and Grade 5 if taking 2 Art courses
