Useful Information
The government requires that all students who have not achieved at least a Grade 4 in GCSE English Language (and Mathematics) retake these qualifications during their time at College. Students falling into this category are required to take the AQA English Language GCSE course at College. This practical, skills-based course is designed to help students improve both their reading and writing skills. Before taking exams, students will be assessed by teaching staff in speaking and listening and must have achieved an acceptable level before proceeding to the examination stage of the course. Successful students will sit two exams, each lasting one hour and 45 minutes, and each weighted at 50%. The College has an excellent record of helping students move from a Grade 3 to a Grade 4 over one or more years.
Course Overview
Students will study a wide range of texts from the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries, including literature, literary non-fiction, as well as other writing such as reviews and journalism. They will critically evaluate texts, make comparisons between texts, and summarize and synthesize information or ideas from texts. Additionally, students will use knowledge gained from wide reading to inform and improve their own writing.
Course Highlights
The College organizes a number of educational experiences each year to enable students to contextualize their learning. These experiences include trips to The Globe, The National Theatre, Chichester Festival, and talks/workshops from visiting speakers.
