Students study Pure Mathematics, Statistics and Mecahnics. Pure Mathematics develops the ideas met at GCSE, such as Algebra, Graphs, and Trigonometry. Mechanics discusses forces that act on bodies and any resultant motions with the help of modelling. Statistics is the study of data.
Students must be competent in manipulating algebraic equations and should enjoy interpreting graphs.
The course is assessed by three 2 hour papers at the end of year 2. All papers are calculator.
The exam board for this A Level is Edexcel.
This Pearson Edexcel Level 3 Advanced Subsidiary GCE in Further Mathematics builds on the skills, knowledge and understanding set out in the whole G CSE subject content for mathematics an d the subject content for the Pearson Edexcel Level 3 Advanced Subsidiary and Advanced GCE Mathematics qualifications. Assessments will be designed to reward students for demonstrating the ability to provide responses that draw together different areas of their knowledge, skills and understanding from across the full course of study for the AS level Further Mathematics qualification and also from across the A level Mathematics qualification. Problem solving, proof and mathematical modelling will be assessed in Further Mathematics in the context of the wider knowledge which students taking AS Further Mathematics will have studied.
Students can progress to HE qualifications with high level of demand of mathematics.
Typical students pursue careers in Mathematics, Computing, engineering finance etc.
