Course Overview
The world we live in is changing. Geography allows us to
see why and how it is changing. It can enhance communication skills, literacy
and numeracy skills, IT literacy, spatial awareness, team-work and problem
solving skills, as well as environmental awareness. “Geography is the study of
Earth’s landscapes, peoples, places and environments. It is, quite simply, about
the world in which we live.” Source RGS Students will cover a wide range of
topics and experience a variety of learning and teaching
approaches.

Course Highlights
Geography students study a range of Human and Physical
topics and explore how their own actions can relate to the wider world. Students
will undertake geographical fieldwork and research as well as develop their
geographical skills and their confidence in working with statistical techniques.
Physical topics: Tectonic hazards and processes; Coastal landscapes and change.
The water cycle and water insecurity; The carbon cycle and energy insecurity.
Human topics: Globalisation, Regenerating Places. Superpowers, Geopolitics and
Health, Human Rights and Intervention. The A Level course includes university
taster days to the Royal Holloway and a compulsory field trip within the UK.
This forms an essential part of exam preparation and coursework at A Level and
does involve a financial cost. Please contact the Geography Department if you

Career Opportunities & Further Study
Many of our students go on to take a degree in Geography
or a closely related subject. Employers like Geographers because they develop
skills in literacy, numeracy, IT and spatial awareness; additionally they
develop team skills and can articulate and analyse complex problems. Geography
is an excellent facilitating subject for any professional career. Studying
Geography opens up a wide range of careers, including Environmental Management,
Business and Marketing, Planning, International Relations and Geographical
Information Systems. Teachers will be able to advise students about university
entry and careers of an environmental or geographical
nature.

Assessment
The A Level is 20% coursework and 80% examination based,
with three papers sat in May/June.

Entry Requirements
Students
wishing to include A Levels in their programme need to have (or expect to
achieve) at least five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English at
grade 5 and mathematics at grade 5.
Students
will need a satisfactory school reference and also meet the following minimum
GCSE requirement:
Grade 4 in both Core and Additional Science and Grade 5 in
Geography, if taken
