Useful Information

Understanding the Media and examining its role in society is key to our culture. Students will learn how to analyse a range of media text including genre, narrative and representation in a range of media texts including computer games, television and advertising.

In the second year of study, students work to produce their own industry standard media products such as magazine articles and posters.

Students will enjoy this course if they:

  • Are willing to take part in debate and express their views 
  • Are interested in the role of media in modern society 
  • Are interested in how technology is changing media industries

This course is assessed through both examinations and coursework.

The exam board for this A Level is WJEC.



Course Highlights

Course Specific Trips & Visits

The College runs a number of educational experiences each year to enable students to contextualise their learning. These experiences include trips and presentations by visiting speakers.

Recently, Media Studies students visited London cinemas as part of the BFI London Film Festival, to take part in screenings, some with Q&A sessions with the Film Makers. They have also visited The Harry Potter Studios at Levesdon to participate in a story-boarding masterclass and study the set and costume designs.



Career Opportunities & Further Study
This course provides a useful background for academic or vocational courses at university and/or employment in Media industries eg production companies, PR, Journalism, Advertising, Music Industry or teaching/lecturing in Media.

Assessment

This course is assessed through both examinations and coursework.

Entry Requirements

Students wishing to include A Levels in their programme need to have (or expect to achieve) at least five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English at grade 4.

Students will need a satisfactory school reference
