Useful Information
The Level 3 Foundation Diploma course leading to the
Extended Diploma in Music in the second year, is suitable for all
instrumentalists or vocalists who have some proficiency and a passion to develop
as a performer. The course broadens students’ experience and skills in solo and
ensemble performing and includes workshops in improvisation and other techniques
associated with live performance. The course is designed to provide learners
with a comprehensive study of the fundamentals of music. Learners will focus on
developing their music skills and a good understanding of the music
industry.
The qualification provides the knowledge, skills and
understanding that will prepare learners for further study or training. Learners
taking this qualification will study two mandatory learning and teaching
modules: ‘Music Skills Development or Music Production Skills Development’
(internally assessed) and ‘The Music Industry’ (internally
assessed). The mandatory content allows learners to concentrate on either the
development of their musical performance or production skills and creation
techniques and relate them to the music industry.
Any musical style is suitable to perform, and the course
includes training in listening and critical review. Confidence in some form of
musical literacy skills is helpful although not essential. Students should be
creative and willing to be involved with the musical activities of the
Department. Specialist units include, for example, the Sound and Music Industry
which will give students a good grounding in the inner workings of the Music
business (including its structure, how to get freelance work and record
deals).
