Course Overview

This course introduces learners to a variety of materials and techniques that will help them progress to further learning. Learners will acquire and develop their skills and knowledge over the course of the year, learning the transferable and specific sector skills relevant for their success.

A variety of topics and materials will include:

Creating an Art Image (still life, oil pastels, colouring and mark-making)

Creating a Clay Artefact (air-dry clay, earthenware clay, access to pottery studio)

Presenting an Image Using a Camera (access to photography studio, darkroom)

Creating Prints (mono-printing, lino-prints, access to screen printing studio)

Researching a Topic (learning and developing researching techniques, use of college learning resources)

Working with Others (developing transferable skills to support progression)

Creating a 3D Art Object (variety of different 3D materials)



Course Highlights

By providing a broader sector experience the course encourages learners to take on some individual research, enabling them to be further prepared for higher-level learning.

The course includes work experience, enrichment activities and exhibitions and collaborative projects.



Career Opportunities & Further Study
On completion you will be able to progress to Level 2 Diploma in Art & Design, inclusive of Graphic Design and Illustration, and Level 2 Games & Animation.

Assessment
Assessment is designed to fit the purpose and objective of the course and all units are internally assessed – giving learners the opportunity to demonstrate skills developed in applied scenarios. All units are graded to encourage skills development and performance. Units are assessed using a grading scale of Distinction, Merit, Pass and Unclassified. Grading has been introduced at this level as a result of feedback from users and practitioners of the qualification.

Entry Requirements

Evidence of a commitment to learn and the ability to study at this level shown at interview; including GCSE English and Mathematics at grade 2 or equivalent;

AND

An art portfolio, containing recent examples of artwork, sketchbooks, photogra­phy work, or any creative work you have done. This could be both course work and work you have created in your own time.
