Course Overview
This qualification provides a practical introduction to the construction industry, allowing learners to explore a range of trades such as bricklaying, carpentry, plastering, tiling, painting and decorating, plumbing, and electrical work. It is suitable for learners who are interested in developing foundation skills for a career in construction, especially those unsure which trade to specialise in. Learners will gain both practical and employability skills through hands-on workshops and site visits.
Learners must wear appropriate protective clothing, including safety boots, gloves, and hi-vis vests. The course also includes employability sessions, guest talks from local employers, and support from the College’s Careers and Student Services teams to help plan next steps into further study, apprenticeships, or employment.

Course Highlights
The Construction Multi Skills Level 1 course offers a comprehensive introduction to a variety of construction trades, combining practical experience with essential theoretical knowledge. Core units cover Health, Safety and Welfare in Construction, Technical Information, Quantities and Communication, and Construction Technology. Learners develop hands-on skills through activities such as plastering, painting, bricklaying, woodworking, fitting architrave, and tiling. Designed for those seeking to build practical experience across multiple trades, the course also focuses on developing safe working practices, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. Training takes place in purpose-built workshops equipped with industry-standard tools and materials, with opportunities for site visits and guest sessions with employers. Learners who have not yet achieved GCSE grade 4 in English or Maths will study these subjects alongside the main qualification.

Career Opportunities & Further Study
Successful learners can progress onto a full Level 2 Diploma or VRQ in a specific trade area such as Bricklaying, Carpentry, Plumbing, or Electrical Installation. The qualification also supports entry into a construction-related apprenticeship or employment as a trainee within the sector, with typical next steps including a Level 2 Diploma in Construction (City & Guilds), a Level 2 Diploma in Plumbing, Electrical, or Multi-Skills, or an Apprenticeship in a chosen trade.

Assessment
The Construction Multi Skills Level 1 Diploma is assessed through a combination of practical assessments, written assignments, and online or paper-based exams. Throughout the course, your tutors will observe and evaluate your hands-on skills in the workshop as you complete set tasks in areas such as bricklaying, carpentry, painting, plastering and tiling. In addition to the practical work, you'll complete written coursework and knowledge-based assessments that test your understanding of essential topics like health and safety, construction technology and communication in the workplace.

Entry Requirements
GCSE grade 9-2 (A*-E) in English and maths. Equivalence of these qualifications will be considered. Evidence of a commitment to learn and the ability to study at this level shown at interview.
