Course Overview
The Level 3 Playwork course is designed to equip you with the knowledge, skills, and practical experience needed to support children and young people in diverse play environments. You will explore the fundamental principles of playwork, learn how to create safe, inclusive, and stimulating play settings, and develop the ability to promote positive relationships with children, families, and colleagues. Through a combination of theoretical study and work placements, you will gain a thorough understanding of safeguarding, child development, health and safety, and inclusion. To complete the course, you will study and successfully pass 16 units that cover these key areas and more, ensuring you are fully prepared for a career in the playwork sector.

This Level 3 Playwork course offers a comprehensive understanding of the principles and practices of playwork, helping you develop the skills needed to support children and young people across a variety of play settings. You will learn how to create inclusive, stimulating, and safe play environments while gaining practical experience through work placements in real-world playwork settings. The course covers essential topics such as safeguarding, child development, and health and safety, and focuses on enhancing your communication and leadership abilities for working effectively with teams and families. You will study a range of units designed to build your expertise, including understanding play and the Playwork Principles, contributing to the running of a playwork setting, maintaining health, safety, and security, developing and promoting relationships, supporting children with additional needs, and fostering inclusion. Additional units cover organisational frameworks to protect children’s rights, preparing for and supporting children’s play, safeguarding, creating supportive environments, professional development, and exploring different perspectives on playwork.

Career Opportunities & Further Study
Before and after-school clubs, holiday playschemes, adventure playgrounds, open-access play settings, and play ranger services. Progression opportunities include higher education or other related qualifications in playwork or a similar field.

Assessment
You will be assessed through a combination of coursework, professional discussions, observations in your childcare setting, work-related evidence, scenario-based tasks, and witness testimonies.

Entry Requirements
GCSE grade 9-4 in English and Maths or Functional Skills Level 2 is required, with preference given to those who have completed a Level 2 vocational course related to childcare or have relevant work experience in the childcare sector. If students cannot provide evidence of their English and Maths qualifications, they will be required to complete assessments in these subjects. Learners should be working at Level 2 in both English and Maths, and may also need to complete a written task to verify their skill level if necessary.
