Useful Information
The Level 3 Foundation Diploma course leading to the Extended Diploma in Music in the second year is suitable for instrumentalists or vocalists who have some proficiency and a passion to develop as a performer. The course broadens students’ experience and skills in solo and ensemble performing, including workshops in improvisation and other live performance techniques. The course provides a comprehensive study of the fundamentals of music, focusing on developing music skills and understanding of the music industry.
The qualification prepares learners for further study or training, with two mandatory learning and teaching modules: ‘Music Skills Development or Music Production Skills Development’ (internally assessed) and ‘The Music Industry’ (internally assessed). Learners can concentrate on developing their musical performance or production skills and creation techniques and relate them to the music industry.
Students of any musical style can perform, and the course includes training in listening and critical review. While some musical literacy skills are helpful, they are not essential. The course also includes specialist units such as the Sound and Music Industry, providing students with a good grounding in the inner workings of the music business, including its structure, how to get freelance work, and record deals.
