Course Overview

This course is designed for those who have a passion for cars as well as an interest in the maintenance of vehicles. This programme will provide you with an introduction to the industry, as well as the practical experience and the technical knowledge needed to work in the automotive industry. You will learn how to carry out maintenance and repairs on cars, vans, and other light vehicles in our modern, fully equipped workshops.

Throughout the course you will study a range of subjects including:

 Engines and steering
 
Chassis and frames
 
Light vehicle construction and routine maintenance
 
Electrical systems
 
Operating principles of light vehicle engines and transmission systems
 
Health and safety practices.

Good English and Maths skills are essential for success in studying and for future employment prospects and so Croydon College ensures that these skills are developed in all learning opportunities.

It’s also important to have good English and Maths qualifications and so all students will study English and Maths and work towards an appropriate level and type of qualification including GCSE. This will be part of all 16-18 year old students’ Study Programme alongside their main vocational or academic qualification and will be discussed with students at interview.



Course Highlights
Specialist Facilities: This programme is delivered by our fully qualified and professional staff. You will gain experience in exactly what it would be like to work as a technician in a modern workshop. You will learn the basics of vehicle maintenance, in both the classroom and the workshop, while working towards completing a portfolio. You will benefit from working in a modern, fully equipped vehicle workshop with an extensive range of industry standard Snap-on and Bosch diagnostic equipment. You will be working on a fleet of modern vehicles and you will diagnose faults on bespoke engine running rigs. Trips and Activities: You will have the opportunity to participate in trips and visits to: Brands Hatch BMW training at Reading The Mini production line based at Oxford. Employers attend our popular employability events and you can discuss Apprenticeships and progression opportunities in our Employability Hub or in the Apprenticeship Office.

Career Opportunities & Further Study

Completion of this course can lead to progression to our Level 2 vehicle maintenance programme. Alternatively, you could enter employment within the motor industry as an apprentice.

Assessment
Assessment is based on a combination of practical assignments and three online theory tests.

Entry Requirements
GCSE grade 9-2 (A*-E) in English and maths. Equivalence of these qualifications will beconsidered. Evidence of a commitment to learn and the ability to study at this level shown at interview. Mature applicants may be considered on relevant experience without having the required entry requirements. However, an interview will always be required.
