Course Overview

Access to HE Diplomas are well established, national qualifications which allow students, without traditional Level 3 qualifications, to apply for degree courses and enter university. The Nursing Diploma is suitable for those who have been out of full-time education for some time and aiming to join university or higher education courses. This qualification requires a maturity of approach and a high level of commitment. In addition, applicants need a successful interview and screening and must have sufficient time to devote to their studies.

This is a qualification designed for an interest in:

Adult Nursing

Child Nursing

Mental Health Nursing

Learning Disability Nursing

Adults seeking a change of direction because of unemployment or lack of career opportunities.

Access to University is an intensive study programme; you must be completely committed to hard work and are required to maintain full, 100%, attendance throughout the course. Good English and Maths skills are essential for success in studying and for future employment prospects therefore, Croydon College ensures that these skills are developed in all learning opportunities. Academic and tutorial support is given throughout the course, and you’ll receive help and advice with your university application throughout the UCAS process.

Entry Requirements

You must be aged 19 and above. Proficiency in written and spoken English needs to be demonstrated:

GCSEs – grades A* – C / 9 – 4 

Functional Skills Level 2 

Recognised non-UK GCSE equivalencies in English and Maths preferred

However, each application will be considered on an individual basis. Selection is by:

Initial screening 

Literacy and Numeracy tests


We will invite you to a Meet the Tutor event where you will receive information, advice, and guidance about the course you have applied for. This will be an opportunity for you to gain valuable information about the course and give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

Universities are increasingly asking for GCSEs or Functional Skills (Level 2) as part of their entry criteria please note that it is the responsibility of the student to ensure their current and future qualifications comply with the entry requirements of any university to which they intend to progress.

Financial eligibility:

You need to have evidence that you meet general discretionary Learner Support Funds or 19+ Advanced Learning Loan bursary fund criteria. Check if you’re eligible for an Advanced Learner Loan by contacting Student Finance England.

Repaying your loan:

Student Finance England will ‘write off’ any outstanding Advanced Learner Loan balances you owe for an Access to HE course once you complete a higher education course. This means you do not have to repay it.
