Course Overview

This level 2 childcare qualification allows learners to gain an understanding of:

How children’s development can be influenced by factors such as nutrition

Safeguarding responsibilities of those who care for children and young people

The importance of activities, play and interaction

How to contribute positively to the development of children and young people at different stages



Course Highlights

Unit 1: Young children’s development

This level 2 childcare qualification starts with an exploration of stages of development in young children from birth to three years and how positive environments support the development of young children.

Unit 2: The value of play to young children

In this unit learners will understand the necessity of play to young children’s development and different play activities that are suitable for young children, from birth to five years old.

Unit 3: Importance of play for early learning

In this unit learners will learn more about the importance of creativity and imaginative play for a child’s development. You will learn how to organise a cooking activity for children and the important role creative activities play in enhancing children’s learning and development. You will also learn about the importance of talking and listening activities.

Unit 4: Safeguarding the welfare of children and young people

This unit will cover the legislation, guidelines, policies and procedures for safeguarding the welfare of children and young people, including e-safety. Learners will also cover what action to take when children or young people are injured or ill, including emergency procedures and how to respond to suspicions that a child or young person has been abused, harmed or bullied.

Unit 5: Use food and nutrition information to plan a healthy diet

In this unit learners will build an understanding of making good food and nutritional choices, including understanding food labelling and what to look out for to ensure that children are given a nutritious, balanced diet.

Entry Requirements

There are no specific entry requirements for this course; however, learners should have a minimum of level one in literacy or equivalent.

Our Level 1 and 2 distance learning courses are free if eligible for government funding if you meet the following criteria:

Must be aged 19 and over.

If aged 19-23, you must hold a full Level 2 qualification or above (five GCSEs/O Levels grade A-C/9-4, two or three AS Levels, one A Level, NVQ Level 2, First Certificate or Principle of Learning Level 2).

If aged 24+ no qualifications are required.
